  • Can also include a fear of hurting oneself or others

  • A strong mistrust of self and doubt about one's own actions

2 / Behavioural
  • Repetitive actions which temporarily relieve the intrusive thoughts

  • Excessive or ritualised actions, such as hand-washing, door-locking or checking

  • Very specific rules around arrangement of objects and desire for order

3 / Treatment
  • Treatment can require several months depending on severity. 

  • Modalilties such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Schema Therapy, seek to understand and challenge the basis for the intrusive thoughts, thereby mitigating the compulsive behaviours.

  • Intrusive thoughts are often linked to unresolved shame or guilt within an individual.
